Why does my young hamster have hair loss?

My 6 month old Syrian hamster has bald, scaly patches on her hind quarters but they don't seem to cause discomfort. The rest of her fur is thick and healthy looking. I've been looking on the web and sites seem to indicate that this is normal for an older hamster but mine is still young. Is this mites, or just her rubbing against parts of the cage?

I also have several other hamsters in separate cages but in the same room. Is the skin condition contagious or airborn?

HIV!
Reply:usually this is only caused by itchiness... they get so itchy they bite and bite untill patches of fur come off..

i think you should check with a vet.. maybe your hamster has fleas? in that case, it can easily be delt with.

bring all your hamsters in to get them checked. you can never be too sure.

good luck!
Reply:u shud just call ur vet. dont trust the wackos who answer stuff in here. beleev me i'm one of them
Reply:ok, first 6 month isnt exactly younge for a hamser. Second she might have a rash of some sort :-(. Try calling a vet for advice. There is a kind of cream to rub on them they wont ich and will take the redness away. before you know it her hair will be back and better :-) Also stress causes that somtimes.

good luck :-) ♥
Reply:It could be numerous things-- rubbing against the cage, mites, lice. Your best bet would be to go to a vet or atleast call and ask.
Reply:You could bathe her and make sure she has fresh water and food everyday. Keep her cage clean and if she loses any weight take her to a vet immediately. My two hamsters died aftr they lost some weight. One bit the other so I had to separate them and the one that was bitten got smaller and smaller and eventually died.

It was the first time I had hamsters and I didn't realize that something was wrong with him. The other one that remained lost weight too and then I realized that he wasn't going to the toilet at all. He ended up dying. I was so sad I couldn't even cry.
Reply:This can mean death is near, but if he's that young I doubt it. Maybe he's just itching.............?
Reply:Take it to a vet right away
Reply:I have dwarf hamsters and one of mine had the same problem. I took him to the vet and she said he's okay. As long as he's still active, drinks water, and eats, it should be alright.
