Why is the media focused on "light skin" Black women when they don't represent Black beauty?

As a young White male I find a lot of Black women very attractive but I rarely see women that look African on TV protrayed as beautiful. Even in African American shows and magazines the lighter skin girls are preferred. There are a lot of East African beauties like Liya Kebede, Iman, Alek Wek, Yasmin Warsime etc.. who absolutely gorgeous but you never see that many of them protrayed as beautiful. As well as West African beauties such as Agbani Darego, and Oluchi Onweagba who are gorgeous but you never see that as much as the lighter skin models and actresses.

Why is the media focused on "light skin" Black women when they don't represent Black beauty?
Black is Black, irregardless of the skin tone. I am just happy to see women of color represented period. I don't care how light or dark they are.

Reply:I know and I dont understand it either there are so many beautiful dark skinned women out there!And its all foucused on thin lite skin women.Now i am a thick white girl and im proud of the way i look.But i guess skin color is becoming look at the same way weight is and its wrong!Everyone is beautiful.

Reply:beauty is relative. and maybe it's to keep up pretenses revolving around the media's insistence that racism toward non-whites is so prevalent.
Reply:As long as white women fry themselves in the sun to look darker and pay for butt implants, they are admitting that black is beautiful.
Reply:The fact that Alex Wek and Liya Kebede can today be successful supermodels is proof that society has changed, even if TV shows and magazines don't seem to reflect the change as much as the runways would suggest. And society will continue to progress, albeit slowly. Look at the ripple effect of another big change on the runways: the banning of models who are too thin. It started in Spain and made its way to NYC. With the success of "The Devil Wears Prada" film (and book) and the "Ugly Betty" TV series, the whole 'Thin Is In' approach to beauty is on its way out. Pun intended. 'White Is Right' and 'Light Is Right' are sure to follow...some day.





Although you're right in a way, who says we don't represent Black beauty? Black beauty encompasses all shades. I understand your point. Don't get me wrong, it's something (as a light skinned Black woman) I've considered for YEARS!





Lastly, would I be wrong to be doubtful you're really a white male? Most guys don't seem to think about these things, and most white ppl don't seem to be able to distinguish b/t light skinned and dark skinned blacks. Really.

Reply:Im not really understanding why so many answerers are downing this question. Its very valid. Have you all never heard of the prejudices running high within the african american race amongst EACHOTHER??? Even within the own race, many (not all so dont step 2 me with your comments) dark skinned women feel hatred towards liter skinned women because black society boasts "Lighter is Better". When surveyed (google it), 84% of african-american men, when asked, said they prefer light skinned women over dark skinned sisters. Why? Is it truly because they look better? Or is it because they are more "society friendly"? Yea....we are still stuck in the Brown Paper Bag Phase:Lighter than the bag="YOU'RE IN!" Darker than the bag="Get Back To The Back Of The Bus"
Reply:Because the majority of people in this country are White and I hate to stereotype but most of them have a hard time finding other groups of people desirable or as good as them. They only like Black women that look biracial or that are so light that you almost think their White. I personally don't think Halle Berry looks "white",there are a lot of pure 100% Africans that have narrower features then hers such as Iman, Liya Kebede, Yasmin Warsime etc... Not all Black people look the same does Liya Kebede look like Oluchi onweagba or Alek Wek..NO so I think that society need to accept the rich diversity and beauty of Black people. Society also needs to accept the beauty of ALL people around the world and stop using White women as the standard because that isn't fair.
Reply:What about Tyra Banks, Iman, Oprah Winfrey? Are they not portrayed as beautiful...adn not light skinned. Your question really has not merit. And, frankly, by asking it...you contribute to a racial problem. All women are beautiful...black, white, hispanic, eskimo, indian....or mixed.
Reply:There are very few Blacks in this country and most of them are of mixed race. The industry has promoted a plethora of Black women since the late eighties. I agree with a quote Iman made years ago about how Black models make less money and don't get magazine covers or contracts. Liya Kebede has a contract with Estee Lauder. Halle Berry, Iman, Naomi Campbell, etc. have all been on magazine covers. Most magazines have editorials with Black women in them and there are Black magazines. Equality is one thing; feeling sorry for yourself is another.

Reply:in my opinion, light skinned black women often have the best features from both races. unfortunately, it is features and looks which society runs on.
Reply:Well it's simply because society thinks light skinned girls are more beautiful. I don't really think dark-skinned girls are pretty(well some are), but then again i don't think pale girls are pretty either. And i agree with that other lady! Stir up drama in your own race and let us black people make trouble with each other!
