My 12 year old son has VERY Dry Skin on his entire body, What would prevent this?

I have 3 sons, ages 7,11, and 12. My 2 youngest ones have super soft smooth skin because I use Aveeno body lotion on them 2 times a day. My 12 year old son has terrible dry skin ever since he turned 12 we both agreed I don't need to apply lotion on him anymore.

Well I feel that I should still be appyling lotion on my oldest but I'm not sure if I should... I really need some advice about it.

Does it matter what age they are because I really want his skin to stay smooth and soft.

I use Aveeno lotion with coloidal oatmeal...they also make a shower gel.

it's very soothing, not greasy and moisturizes really well...
Reply:Tell him that if he don't apply lotion himself you will do it for him.

Reply:Put some baby oil in a bath and have him bathe in it. The baby oil works like it does when you use it on a baby, no matter what the age of the person.

During summer I can get very dry skin from the beach so I'll often put a large squirt in a bath and lie in it. Fixes my skin right up.

Be careful with some lotions. It can be the natural oils in the skin reacting with the lotion which is causing the dryness.
Reply:12 is still a young age and if he doesn't want to apply the lotion him self then I don't see a problem with you doing it. Also if your sons skin has "terrible dry skin" maybe you should try useing a dry skin cream rather than a lotion that will only last an hour or so.
Reply:Without lotion, your sons should not have really dry skin. Ask a doctor if it is really apparant....are they drinking enough water?
Reply:Use a good moisturing shower gel (Dove shower cream) instead normal soap if your son doesn't want the lotion.
Reply:ur son is too lazy to be self reliant and responsible for his own skin, so you either apply on him or just watch his skin get worse.
Reply:aveeno makes this oatmeal stuff you can take a bath in...it keeps moisture in the skin so you should try tht.. keep applying lotion or have him use it himself..tell him the ladies arent gonna like a guy with dry peeling flaky skin!! which is true!.. lol
Reply:In this case, I would also pay a lot of attention to the food he is eating. The skin problem may be the result of too many additives, the lack of water in his body and/or the nutritional value of the food he is taking. His body is changing and in need of some serious fuel ;) If he is taking too much of one type of food, and not enough of the other, it might result in such conditions as dry skin. I would suggest reading a book on this matter, maybe someone can suggest something? Do a lot of research before buying it.

In addition to food, here are some questions you might answer to yourself:

- What kind of soap is he using? Can you find a mild, ph neutral without parfume?

- What kind of washing soap and conditioner do you use on his clothes, towels and bed linen? What is the mildest, safest product for him?

- Does he eat enough fruit and vegetables? The most important water in the body is the one taken through food. He should stay off the fizzy drinks and food loaded with artificial flavours, colours, additives.

You can keep using the lotion, but you have to find the cause of the problem and remove it. The lotion will just help the healing process, and protect the skin from further damage - but it is not the ultimate solution.

Don't forget to talk to your (son's) doctor too!

I hope this little helps, good luck to you and your family.
Reply:I'm guessing it might be heriditary. You should take him to see a dermatologist.
