Do you think that young, beautiful people make less convincing actors than older or plainer people?

I find young, beautiful, well made up actors and actresses with perfect skin and features (eg. Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johannson) generally less convincing in their parts compared to the likes of Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman, James Gandolfini, and Helen Mirren. Do others agree?

Sometimes, yeah. But I think that actors who may not be considered classically attractive turn out to be the most attractive in the end because of their acting skills, for one, and their personalities (or whatever shows through their characters and real persona). Those with just a pretty face have really got nothing to show but... a pretty face, whatever that looks like. Natalie and Scarlett do nothing for me at all. Incredibly bland.
Reply:Generally I don't think physical beauty adds or subtracts from anyone's acting ability. It's the quality of the acting that counts. For instance, Spencer Tracy wasn't "handsome" by Hollywood standards, but he was a fine actor. On the other hand, Kirsten Dunst certainly is attractive, but that didn't take away anything from her performance in "Interview With A Vampire".
