Dry flaky skin on knee. What is it?

I've had this dry skin patch on my knee for at least 2 months now. It's only on one knee (on the part where I would kneel) and seems to be something more than just dry skin. It gets flaky and itchy sometimes but that may be from the dryness. It is slightly red underneath. I did some searching on the internet and thought maybe eczema but that seems to mostly happen to young children and I'm in my 40s. It does seem to improve when I put skin cream or coconut oil on it, but it doesn't seem to want to go away and then it seems to get worse again if I don't keep putting something on it. What can this be? I'm hoping to be able to treat it naturally rather than with medication.

It looks as if you have psoriasis which is a common, genetically determined, inflammatory and proliferative disease of the skin, the most characteristic lesions consisting of chronic, sharply demarcated, dull-red scaly plaques. The disease is enormously variable in duration and extent and morphological variants are common. The good news (in your case) is that most people who develop it do so before age 30 and you are in your 40’s. The bad news is that psoriasis commonly occurs on pressure points such as the elbows, knees, and knuckles, as well as on the scalp, the trunk, the arms and legs, the external sex organs, and the fingernails and toenails; you seem to have it on your knees.

Reply:I don't know, but it sounds exactly like my right knee. I've had it for seeral years and it never goes away. Like you said it softens with lotions, but mine never heals completely. It's weird, but it doesn't spread, so I haven't worried too much about it.
