I'm worried about skin cancer. Can anyone tell me if they think I am at major risk?

I have been recently worrying about skin cancer, sunspots, etc. I'm very fair-skinned. I haven't been out in the sun much recently, but I was outside more when I was younger (I'm 15 now.) Although I usually put on sunscreen, I did get a pretty bad sunburn when I was in middle school. All of my other sun burns have been fairly mild. I'm just concerned that some of those sunburns will catch up to me. I haven't been outside much the past few years, which is why I'm very pale at the moment. I've always been fair-skinned and have burned easily. I'm going to try to stay out of the sun as much as possible, although I do have a bit of a sunburn at the moment. I've NEVER tanned in a tanning salon or just layed out to try to tan. Can anybody help me and possibly give me more information so I can see how much at risk I am? Thanks!

Like the others said yes your at risk. Every sunburn you have gotten has damaged the cells in your skin, a bad one or just a little pink one did. The best advice is not to worry but use sunscreen year around because even if its 30 below if the sun is shining it can affect your skin. So wear good sunscreen. I know this because, I am only 35 and my dermatologist is shocked at my skin, I don't have a lot of wrinkles but I have a condition that they only usually see in 70 year olds. I have had my share of skin cancer too. I grew up in Southern California and the sun blaring all the time. Don't make the same mistake. I applaud you at 15 being concerned about your skin. I wouldn't worry about skin cancer yet, take the precautions of sun screen, and check your skin for any moles, freckles or discoloration. If you can go to the dermatologist that would be great too. With fair skin or dark skin they still say to wear sunscreen year around. I hope this helps a little bit.
Reply:If you have freakles, birth marks and light skinned, then you should regularly check your self in your local doctor. I am light skin and all 2 and i take high levels of Vitamin C and D. That is thought to keep back the growing of skin cancer. I use to burn but since i've been taking the Vitamin C, D and also my Multi Vitamins from GNC, i am starting to Tan a bit. You should try it to see how it will work with you. Good Luck.
Reply:If you've had sun poisoning, you may have a slightly higher risk. Use a lotion every day with an SPF of 15 or more; if you go in the sun, use a sunblock of 30+, even 60, and see if it blocks both UVA %26amp; UVB rays. If you wear makeup, use one with sunscreen of SPF15 %26amp; up (mine is a 17, by L'Oreal). I've known people who tanned great, never burned, and got melanoma. Keep an eye on your freckles %26amp; beauty marks; if you have a lot, have your doctor or dermatologist go over them to get a baseline look. If you see any weird changes in a mole or beauty mark, ask your doctor to have a look. Also, by using sunscreen every day, you're helping to prevent wrinkles! And you can still enjy the summer!
Reply:Skin cancers can be very slow moving. It could be decades before you see signs. So be vigilant. Just having fair skin is a risk factor. Get checked regularly, and look for any changes yourself.
